YET ANOTHER ORGANIC ARTICLE

Often when we, the lay-person, read studies about Organic Farming Practices we tend to think in terms of vegetables and fruits. What we do not realize is that the numbers we read about involve many crops that we never see on our plates. The crops that are traded commodities: cotton, wheat, barley, timber all fall under the heading (and by extension the numbers) for Organic.
The other thing we, the lay-man, do not understand is that agriculture is a broad field of study with many products. Wood pulp and fibers are two grand examples. Even I, a seasoned farmer forget this obvious fact. Agriculture is about more than fruits, grains, nuts and vegetables.
When you read articles about ORGANIC be aware that there are other factors that muddy the Organic debate:
• Agriculture is a VERY broad term and includes many things OTHER than food. And then of course there are the foods that sit on both sides like cotton.
• Can it really compete with Conventional Farming?
• Can we feed the world on Organics practices alone?
• Is Organic really any healthier or better for you than Conventional Farming?
Seriously? I do NOT understand why these questions are always a part of the Organic debate. Haven’t we ALL been touched by knowing someone fighting for their lives because of cancer? Isn’t the link between chemicals and cancer a clear one? Why do we question the use of LESS chemicals?
And then of course there is THIS fact: Of the 80, 000 synthetic chemicals in use today, the EPA has a full set of toxicity information on 7% of these chemicals. That translates to 99% of the chemicals in use today have never been tested on human health.**
