GREEN ENVELOPE MAKING

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAFirst impressions count and the envelope is the first thing you see when you go to the mailbox. When you send your friend a birthday greeting what does your envelope say?

I am always searching for unique envelopes, the gem that tells my friend; “I love you”, “I have been thinking about you” and a green envelope says that and more, it says; “I spent time thinking about you while I made this envelope”.

So join the revolution and make a green envelope to have or to share, don’t be shy make them and you will think of ways to use them.

Materials List:

8X10      paper, magazines, circulars, comics, wallpaper, art paper, wrapping paper, colored craft paper, reproducible photos, collages or design

  • Sharp scissors, Olfa cutter or Exacto knife
  • Glue sticks
  • Straight edged ruler
  • Bone folder ( nice, but optional)

The Green Movement had a predecessor whose motto was:

  • Reduce
  • Reuse
  • Recycle

Reduce means to not buy, support or bring home items that come with too much packaging. Use cloth bags to bring groceries home and try buying only recycled office supplies.

This is the step where choices have to be made and you have to ask yourself the hard questions, do I want to support (give my money) to a company that does THAT?

Reuse means to use a product more then once. An easy one is to use the shipping boxes and turn them into new shipping boxes. Reuse those ‘disposable’ plastic containers and try watering your shrubs with used (grey) sink water.

Recycle means to turn it into a new product, the last step is to put it into the recycling bin to be turned into a new item by someone else.

CONGRATULATIONS! By making green envelopes you are doing all three steps!

You have reduced the need to buy envelopes and the boxes they come in. You have reused a magazine or circular paper again and you are recycling paper that you would have trashed.

Having fun while helping the planet and putting a smile on the face of the person who receives your green envelope, well done!
