Not only are bee colonies collapsing globally but there is much MIS-INFORMATION (designed to ignite controversy) yet the facts are clear, bees are disappearing and the USDA wants to help.

“USDA allocates millions of dollars to create bee habitats

The USDA (Department of Agriculture) announced on June 20, 2014 their own program to help boost beekeeping.  This program has set aside 8 million dollars in incentives for those living in Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.  Research has shown that more than half of commercially managed honey bees are in these states.  The 8 million dollars is in addition to the 3 million dollars already allocated to the Midwest to encourage honey bee production.  The money allocated in this program is to manage or replace vegetation with high nutrition seed mixes that can encourage blooming cycles the benefit the bee’s pollination.(1)

Massive drop in number of honey bee colonies

The USDA reports that the number of honey bee colonies in the United States as dropped from 6 million in 1947 to 2.5 million today. (2)  The ARS (Agricultural Research Services) are currently investigating bee genetics, breeding, biology, physiology, with focuses on nutrition, control of parasites and the effects of pesticide exposure. (3)

Due to the majority of the nations fruits and vegetable productions dependency on bee’s, President Obama issued a memorandum directing that steps be taking to protect and restore honey bees into the agricultural system. (1)

We give up our rights in tiny little ways everyday.

And then we are shocked when laws get passed that we do not like.

Brings to mind a poem:

“First they came for the communists and I did not speak out because I was not a communist. Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew. Finally, they came for me and there was no one left to speak out.”  pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984)

We ALL have these excuses: ‘I’m tired, my days are long, I don’t feel well, next week.’

Why are we shocked when our lawmakers enact laws we find unjust?

Does posting on a social media site mean we acted?

We list what we hate and never pause to list what we love?

How closely do our words and deeds match what we believe in?

What would it look like if we acted and spoke up?

When the airlines started moving the seats closer together did we complain to them?

When the company you work for asked for a drug test did you do it?

We give up our rights in tiny little ways everyday.

We have the power to start new habits.

The company that sells your HEALTHY food should also be healthy; paying fair living wages, investing profits in their communities, supporting and using ingredients that also support healthy companies –who support their employees. Imagine the potential of that? Companies who invest in the people they employ, companies who support local economies: small farmers, artisanal creations, artists, and mom and pop businesses, who support each other.

We have the power to create the kind of world we wish to live in by VOTING WITH OUR DOLLARS every-time we shop. I work really hard to support what I believe in with my hard earned money, join me I hate to do it alone.
